Sumitra Mahajan-'Disposal is necessary but...'?
Former lok sabha Speaker sumitra mahajan on thursday (02 January) expressed concern over the 337 tonnes of toxic waste of Union Carbide factory responsible for the bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. She said that this toxic waste should be disposed of on the basis of detailed discussions with scientists because it is a subject related to the lives of common people. She said this at a time when, 40 years after the gas tragedy, this toxic waste has been transported to an industrial waste disposal unit operated by a private company in Pithampur, about 30 km from Indore.

Waste disposal is not a political issue at all - sumitra Mahajan
The senior leader of the ruling bjp stressed that the disposal of this waste is not a political issue at all. Mahajan said, "This waste should be disposed of on the basis of detailed discussions with scientists and local people should also be prominently involved in this discussion because it is a question of public life."

Mahajan said, "This discussion should be on whether there will be any adverse effect on the environment, land and water sources after the waste is destroyed in Pithampur? The people of bhopal are suffering the ill effects of the gas tragedy for generations, so this waste should be disposed of with full caution. He is confident that the central and state governments will dispose of this waste properly.
