Geographical Indication for Thanjavur artist
At present there is only one artisan Selvaraj. He has been making glass art items for more than 45 years. Apart from the arts, thanjavur has a special pride in the production of art objects. During the period of Cholas, Nayaks and Marathas who ruled with thanjavur as their capital, various arts and artefacts appeared.
Thanjavur Thalaiyatti Bommai, thanjavur Painting, Art Plate, Veena, Netti Work, Swamimalai Five Golden Statues, Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku, Thirubuvanam Pattu and Narasingampettai Nadaswaram have been given GI tags. One of the major specialties of thanjavur is the thanjavur glass art.

In order to save these handicrafts from extinction, the government has arranged to train 55 people through artisan Selvaraj. Now they are also engaged in training in this trade.
In this situation, Sanjay gandhi, government Advocate and Geographical Indications Coordinator, has applied for Geographical Indication from the tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation and thanjavur Handicraft workers Cooperative Cottage industries Society. Advocate Sanjay gandhi was instrumental in getting Geographical Indication (GI) tag for 10 items already in thanjavur and 19 in tamil Nadu.
