Haryana government's reply in HC on Ram Rahim's parole

haryana government has filed its reply in the Punjab-Haryana high court on the question of getting parole for Dera Sachcha Sauda chief Gurmeet ram Rahim. The haryana government has told the court that at least 89 people, like Gurmeet ram Rahim, who were convicted in three or more cases and sentenced to life imprisonment, have been granted parole or furlough on several occasions.

This affidavit has been filed in the punjab haryana high court on the instructions of the HC on behalf of Jail Inspector General (IGP) Jagjit Singh. On february 29, the court had questioned the state government on continuously granting parole to ram Rahim. According to IGP Jagjit Singh, these 89 prisoners also include those sentenced to fixed term.

According to Hindustan Times report, the data was sought from the high court on february 29, preventing the haryana government from considering the parole of ram Rahim without the court's permission. While giving instructions, the court had said that we want the State of haryana to submit an affidavit as to how many people have been given this benefit in three cases, who have a criminal history and have been sentenced. The bench of Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lupita Banerjee of the high court said this during the hearing on a PIL.

Hearing on SGPC's PIL

In january 2023, a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) against the continued parole of ram Rahim. The PIL said that his parole could endanger the sovereignty and integrity of the country. Granting him parole could have disastrous consequences.
