3 AAP councillors join bjp, and mayor of chandigarh resigns...

A day before the supreme court is set to hear a plea claiming irregularities in the recently held mayoral votes, Bharatiya Janata Party's Manoj Sonkar resigned as chandigarh mayor on sunday night, creating a fresh twist in the chandigarh Municipal Corporation. This came after three aam aadmi party council members in chandigarh, Punam Devi, Neha Musawat, and Gurcharan Kala, resigned and joined the bjp on sunday night, claiming their "unhappiness" with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party. The council members had been placed under house arrest three days prior. According to chandigarh bjp president Jatinder Pal Malhotra, Manoj Sonkar tendered his resignation to the municipal commissioner.

Manoj Sonkar, the mayor, has resigned from his position as of today. The supreme court will make a decision on the subject of mayoral polls tomorrow, according to Malhotra. This happened after Anil Masih, the presiding officer for the mayoral elections, was accused of tampering with voting papers by the congress and AAP. A video supposedly showing Masih manipulating eight votes during the january 30 vote-counting process went popular on social media, and the supreme court viewed it with disapproval.

Masih claims that during the vote-counting process, Manoj Sonkar received sixteen votes, kuldeep Dhalor of the AAP-Congress coalition received twelve, and eight of the thirty-six ballots were deemed invalid. The supreme court had chastised Masih on february 5th, saying that it was evident that he had tampered with the ballots and that he ought to data-face legal consequences. It further stated that his actions amounted to "murder and mockery" of democracy. The case was scheduled for hearing on february 19.
