Action taken by Singapore: Sad for chicken lovers!?
Due to the outbreak of H5N1 influenza, singapore has suspended the importation of poultry and poultry products from several regions in affected countries. "Heat-treated poultry products will not be subject to restrictions in accordance with the World Animal health Guidelines for the inactivation of AI virus," the circular for Japanese imports said. Heat-treated poultry refers to processed food-like products. Bird flu, which has killed hundreds of millions of birds in past years, typically strikes europe in the fall and winter, researchers say. It has also recently been found on farms in Cambodia, japan and South Korea.
Japanese media NHK reported last november that the local government in Saga Prefecture would destroy about 40,000 birds at the affected farm.
