The cabinet of andhra pradesh resolved on friday to conduct a thorough caste census, similar to the one in bihar, in order to collect data on the underprivileged segments of the population and guarantee that the government provides socio-economic advantages to them. State communication and public relations minister Ch Srinivasa Venugopala krishna briefed the media following a cabinet meeting presided over by chief minister YS jagan Mohan Reddy. He stated that the notion of a caste census throughout the state was fully reviewed prior to approving the proposal.
"The chief minister noted that a thorough caste survey of this kind would significantly improve the lot of the downtrodden classes and advance their social empowerment," krishna stated.
The opposition parties have been pushing for a caste census and a review of the reservation formula to guarantee that different castes are adequately represented based on their numerical numbers. This has led to the cabinet decision.
The bihar government carried out a similar project earlier this year to gather socioeconomic information on every family in the state. OBCs, or other backward classes, made up 63% of the population according to the survey's conclusions, which were challenged in court.
The issue, which has the potential to upend heartland politics and thrust caste into the center of the political discourse in the 2024 lok sabha elections, has been brought up in other states as well, notably in Rajasthan, chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, which are holding this month's elections. This is after the bihar government announced the results of its caste survey on october 2.
Ahead of the next elections, the congress has made the survey a significant polling platform, pledging to carry it out in Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan, and chhattisgarh in the event that it wins the assembly elections.
In an interview with the media, krishna stated that the enumeration in andhra pradesh will take into account a number of variables, including the socioeconomic position of the populace, education focused on finding a job, and the balance of castes in the community. "The poll will assist in building a database of society's weaker segments, enabling the government to provide them with welfare programs and other financial advantages," krishna stated.
According to the minister, the cabinet also believed that the poll would assist in finding eligible individuals who aren't on the lists of recipients of several social programs. In order to eliminate economic imbalances in society, he continued, "we can plan more human resources development schemes and poverty alleviation programs."
The government stated in a statement that the cabinet had authorised a thorough caste census that will collect basic data on demographic, livelihood, social, and economic aspects, with a special emphasis on the marginalised groups.

In addition to voting on the caste survey, the cabinet also resolved to launch a campaign on the ysr Aarogyasri programme, which will run from november 15 to december 15. The campaign's goals are to encourage people to download the Aarogyasri App and inform them about the free medical care that listed hospitals offer for a variety of conditions.
