Karnataka govt to appeal against Cauvery Regulation Committee order to release Cauvery water to tamil Nadu.

The Cauvery water issue between the states of tamil Nadu and karnataka has increased in the last few days. karnataka government is not implementing Cauvery Management Commission order and supreme court orders. There has been strong opposition in the state to open water to tamil Nadu. There have been complete blockade protests in the state insisting that the Cauvery water should not be opened.

Meanwhile, the Cauvery Management Committee has ordered to release 3,000 cubic feet of water to tamil Nadu for another 16 days from october 16 to october 31, despite the opposition of the karnataka government, which argued that the Cauvery basin has become drought-like due to lack of monsoon rains.

The 88th meeting of Cauvery Management Committee held in delhi was presided over by Member Secretary DT Sharma. Officials from karnataka, tamil Nadu, kerala and puducherry participated in it. Vineet Gupta, a member of the Cauvery Management Committee, said that in a monsoon deficit year, based on the available data, water should be distributed on a proportional basis. A request was made on behalf of the tamil Nadu government that karnataka should share the scarce water immediately. tamil Nadu also pointed out that 16.248 TMC of water is in short supply from june 1 to october 10 in 2023 as per Cauvery Management Committee calculations.

However, karnataka argued that due to failure of monsoon, there is not enough fresh water in the water reservoirs and the water supply is less than 50 percent. After hearing the arguments from all sides, the Cauvery Management Committee ordered the release of 3,000 cubic feet of water to tamil Nadu from october 16 to october 31. Earlier, in a meeting held on september 26, the Cauvery Management Committee had directed karnataka to release 3,000 cubic feet of water to tamil Nadu for 15 days till october 15.

In this situation, the karnataka government will appeal against the order of the Cauvery Regulation Committee ordering the release of Cauvery water to tamil Nadu. This was stated by deputy chief minister and Water Resources minister TK Sivakumar. He met the reporters in Bengaluru and said that it has rained less than once or twice in Bengaluru. But, there is not enough rain in Pilikundulu. He said that he will file an appeal against the order to open water to tamil Nadu. The state reservoirs have an inflow of 8,000-9,000 cubic feet. We will protect the interests of farmers. We are suffering a lot because it is not raining. So we will appeal against the recommendation, he said.

Responding to a question about the problem of farmers facing power cuts and not being able to operate pump sets in many parts of the state, he said that due to drought in many parts of the state, there is power shortage. Energy minister KJ George said he had met the Union Power minister and requested to supply electricity from the Central Power Bank.
