Telangana - IIT Hyderabad Considering Pure Vegetarian Mess after IIT Bombay
IIT-Hyderabad reportedly got an email with a poll for dorm inhabitants, according to a report by The news Minute. The purpose of the poll was to determine whether or not students would be interested in signing up for a dining hall that would only serve vegetarian fare. The email stated that the poll was started at the request of the IIT-H director and a few students and contained a link to a form. The poll was closed the next day, and on July 27, a follow-up email was sent to students who had selected the "pure vegetarian" option, allowing them one more day to finish signing up for it.
Such segregation does not exist in the previous canteen. The new canteen, where even teachers and other staff members now go to dine, has a vegetarian-only area. The professors could be involved in some way. They have set up a separate area with just vegetarian-friendly utensils. The survey's results weren't made public, according to one IIT-H student who wished to remain anonymous.
Unidentified professors from the college told The news Minute that the presence of other staff members who frequent the same cafeteria may have had an impact on the creation of the vegetarian section. A considerable percentage of the IIT-H staff, according to this unnamed teacher, hails from upper-caste communities.
The IIT-H administration is now debating the idea of constructing a specifically vegetarian dining hall in the forthcoming semester after the establishment of a vegetarian-only section. Before choosing catering companies for the "possibility of running a veg mess in one of the dining halls," they sent out a second poll on september 12 to get comments.
