Congress and BJP tussle for piece of Telangana pie today

SIBY JEYYA
There is an unexpected rush, especially from delhi, to get a piece of the most sought-after pie as hyderabad establishes itself as the preferred location for multinational companies across multiple sectors and telangana transforms into one of the States with the fastest growth in the nation despite being the youngest. On sunday, look towards Tukkuguda and the Parade Grounds for proof.

Saffron and tricolour festoons will be present, all with the same goal in mind: to gain power in telangana, a state that is currently leading the nation on a number of fronts, and to make their presence felt in Hyderabad. telangana has become a state where every bjp and congress leader wants to be in power, despite the fact that the BRS government that oversaw this transformation is not in the mood to give up. This is due to the nonstop flow of large scale investments, announcements from international majors of setting up centres here, the introduction of game-changing projects like the palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, the opening of medical colleges in every district, and a booming IT industry.

It is a do-or-die situation for the congress, which is now only a nominal presence in the Legislative assembly and only holds 2 out of 150 seats in the Greater hyderabad Municipal Corporation. This explains why the entire top brass from delhi has arrived in hyderabad for the congress Working Committee (CWC), which is being held here for the first time. They will travel to Tukkuguda on sunday to hear sonia gandhi speak on the party's "Five Guarantees," which are quite similar to the promises made in karnataka and which the congress government there is working hard to implement.

The congress needs to do a lot to mend its image in telangana, especially after its tpcc president injured himself with remarks about offering farmers a three-hour power supply rather than the 24-hour free power supply that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) administration has been successfully providing to more than 27 lakh farmers in this state. It also needs to respond to queries from women over why the party failed to enact the Women's Reservation Bill while holding the majority in the Centre for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014.

The bjp is also making a concerted effort to keep its members together, particularly in light of the ongoing internal strife and frequent resignations of key party figures. With political activity on behalf of the party being reduced to a few dharnas led by G Kishan Reddy, and those too turning out to be merely sound and fury, a change of guard hasn't done much to calm the dissidence or to energise the cadre.

Even though the majority of people in this city prefer to refer to the day as National Integration Day, which the State government is already celebrating on a grand scale, Union minister Amit Shah is expected to address a public gathering at Parade Grounds that has been organised by the Centre under the banner of hyderabad Liberation Day.

The event is actually an attempt to reanimate the party cadre, who have gone completely silent over the last few months after the bjp was reduced to a spectator in the political arena, where the BRS still enjoys a clear upper hand and the congress is scrambling to keep up in order to end up at least a distant second. The BJP's continued insistence on calling it Liberation Day with targeted barbs at the Nizam's era has more than what meets the eye.
