There is danger of sealing of hotels and guest houses in this area?
The owners of hundreds of hotels and guest houses located in Paharganj, a famous area of the capital Delhi
which is crowded with tourists, are facing a dilemma as the ceiling of their hotels and guest houses is hanging.
Once again the reason for hanging this sword has been the borewells installed in those hotels and guest
houses. In fact, about 600 hotels and guest houses in Paharganj area draw ground water through borewells.
Due to this, the groundwater level in Paharganj area has gone down by 30.16 meters. Whereas the ground
water level on the nearby temple road has been recorded at 10 meters.
NGT becomes strict regarding decreasing ground water level
Due to the rapid decline of groundwater level in Paharganj area, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has
started taking strict action against the concerned departments. After which the concerned department is also
planning to take action against the guest house and hotel owners.
letter written to DPCC to cancel consent
According to delhi Jal Board officials, 296 out of 536 guest houses and hotels were inspected at the end of
last month. Out of which the borewells installed in 246 were found illegal. Officials say that guest house or
hotel owners whose borewells are illegal will be sealed and a letter will also be written to DPCC to cancel the
consent of such guest houses and hotels. After the consent is revoked, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi
(MCD) can take sealing action.
Only DM has the right to regularize borewell
Water Board officials say that the borewell of the guest house/hotel owners was registered under the
Voluntary Disclosure Scheme for supplying water to the guest house/hotel. But this does not make their
borewell legal. Only the DM has the right to regularize the borewell.
