Maharashtra’s deputy cm devendra fadnavis has tweeted amidst rising onion prices that soon the central

government will buy 2 lakh metric tonnes of onions. fadnavis, who is on japan tour, said that he had a

phone conversation with home minister amit shah and Commerce and industry minister piyush Goyal.

Digar is that the government has imposed 40 percent export duty on onions, after which there is a lot of

protest in the mandis of Maharashtra.

Fadnavis tweeted, "Today I had a telephonic conversation with Union home minister amit shah and Union

Minister piyush Goyal. The Center has decided to buy 2 lakh metric tonnes of onions. The Center has made

this announcement for the benefit of onions."

He said that "Onion growers of Maharashtra, special purchase centers will be set up in Nashik and

Ahmednagar. onion will be bought here at Rs 2410 per quintal. This will be a big relief for the onion

growers of our state."


Central government made this claim on export duty

On the other hand, on Monday, the central government said that the decision to impose 40 percent export

duty on onions is a timely step to boost domestic supplies and control retail prices.

The government has said this amid protests by farmers at several places in Maharashtra's Nashik district

against the 40 per cent duty imposed on onion exports. Traders are also against the imposition of duty.

Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said, “The imposition of export duty on onions is not

a premature decision. Rather, it is a timely decision to increase domestic availability and curb prices.
