After getting the power of Delhi, LG wrote a letter to CM Kejriwal?

Sekar Chandra
Delhi Lieutenant governor VK Saxena on friday (August 18) wrote a letter to chief minister arvind kejriwal mentioning the

factors that led to the severe floods in the national capital. He suggested several measures to prevent such situation from

happening in future. The Lt governor said that out of 44 km of yamuna in delhi, 22 km stretch from Wazirabad to Okhla has

18 major blockages in the river, as a result of which water flow is obstructed.

The letter said, "The omission on the part of the government included the old and erroneous 'Level-Based Discharge

Computing Table' of the delhi Jal Board to calculate the water release at Wazirabad Barrage and the Construction and

Demolition (C&D) and Unprofessional attitude of government departments in not clearing other garbage from bridge

construction sites, thereby obstructing the free flow of Yamuna.

Vinay Saxena has also mentioned about the accumulation of silt in yamuna in the last several years, which became one of

the reasons for the floods in Delhi. He wrote, “The Najafgarh drain, which brings maximum runoff from the city to the

Yamuna, is filled with 10.8 million metric tonnes of silt and garbage. This seriously affects the water holding/carrying

capacity of this 57 km long stretch.

The Lieutenant governor said that there is not a single department or agency that has the responsibility of taking care of the

Yamuna, especially during floods. Referring to measures to prevent floods in the national capital in future, the Lt Governor

said that a single department should be entrusted with the task of ensuring free flow of yamuna river.

Other measures suggested by the Lt governor include de-silting of Yamuna, Najafgarh drain, preparation of city drainage

master plan and advanced flood management plan for yamuna Bazar and other low-lying areas.
