Seat distribution is going to emerge as a major obstacle in the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi

party (SP), the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh, is very confident about its performance in the upcoming Lok

Sabha elections in 2024 and would not like to give seats to allies other than a token distribution. However, Rashtriya

Lok Dal (RLD), an ally of SP, has already demanded 12 seats.

RLD's state unit chief Ramashish Rai said, "The party did not gain much by giving up seats for an alliance with the

Samajwadi Party. Western UP is the stronghold of RLD and the 12 seats we want to contest are Kairana,

Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nagina, Amroha, Meerut, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Hathras, Fatehpur Sikri, mathura and Baghpat.

However, Samajwadi party sources said that the party leadership will give only five seats to RLD, which may not be

acceptable to RLD. The RLD is in an upbeat mood after its good performance in the 2022 assembly elections. The party

won eight seats and then gained one more seat in a by-election, taking its tally to nine.

The alliance between the RLD and the SP has become more ostentatious following reports that the RLD is keen on

forging an alliance with the congress for the 2024 elections, an alliance for which Akhilesh is not very keen, but only

the congress under pressure from other opposition parties are tolerating
