This report was released last month. IMF has also said in its report that india has almost eliminated "extreme poverty" and called its DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) a logistic marvel. niti aayog has said that poverty has decreased by 9.89 percent in the last five years and in 2015-16, where the number of poor in india was 24.85 percent, it has come down to 14.96 percent in 2019-21. prime minister Modi has also mentioned this figure of niti aayog while replying to the no-confidence motion in the house today.

Number and percentage of poor are decreasing

There are many ways to measure and define poverty in any country. Generally, its data has been collected by counting the population living below the poverty line. Tendulkar and Rangarajan Committee had made two parameters regarding this. Although Rangarajan linked consumption to poverty, it has not been formally recognized. That's why only Tendulkar's scale of earning figures has been recognized directly or indirectly till now. However, in the last few years, developmental economists have argued for defining multidimensional poverty in recent times. At present, india follows the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index and accordingly the latest figures have also been released by NITI Aayog. This is standard development. It is based on three parameters of poverty – health, education and standard of living. In health, nutrition, child and adolescent mortality and maternal health are considered holistically. Similarly, in education, statistics are prepared considering the years of schooling and total school attendance.
