After telangana was formed, the State government approved 29 government medical institutions; 21 of them were now operational, while eight were in the process of being constructed, according to health minister T Harish Rao. There are now 56 medical colleges in the State, which accept students for 2,890 PG seats and 8,515 MBBS seats (both government and private). 26 State government medical institutions, one ESI, one AIIMS, and 28 private medical colleges make up the 56 medical colleges.

It costs roughly Rs. 300 crore to build a medical college with 100 seats and a 430-bed hospital. It costs around Rs. 500 crore to build a medical college with 150 seats and a hospital with 600 beds, he responded to a question. It was mandated for private institutions to assign the "B" category seats to students from the State because telangana students struggle to pursue medicine in other States and overseas, he said.
Additionally, 15 percent of the seats at five medical institutions were allocated to andhra pradesh for a period of ten years in accordance with the bifurcation laws for Andhra Pradesh. However, he continued, this condition was essential for institutions founded before telangana was created, and places in colleges founded after the state's split were reserved exclusively for telangana students.
According to Akbaruddin Owaisi, the leader of the AIMIM Floor, 60% of seats at minority institutions are designated as "A" category seats, compared to 50% in non-minority universities. He claimed that as a result, approximately 300 deserving students were losing out on the chance to pursue a career in medicine and he asked that the continued counselling end right away and that the issue be resolved. The minister replied that a meeting will be set up as soon as possible to consider the matter.
