Warangal floods - Nala encroachments worsen devastation
Despite the rainfall subsiding on thursday and friday, the flood situation persisted, causing immense distress to residents in Bhavani nagar, Naimnagar, Peddammagadda, Kapuwada, jawahar colony, some localities on the Hunter road, ntr nagar, Garibnagar, Santoshimatha Colony, Prashanth nagar, SRR Thota, DK nagar, Siva nagar, Kashibugga, Enumamula market areas, Pochammakunta, ashok Nagar, Goku nagar, and Battala bazaar. Water levels in some of these sites rose to up to two feet and remained still until friday morning at 10 am.
Authorities evacuated citizens from the impacted areas in order to deal with the issue. However, a number of individuals were still left stuck in their houses without access to necessities like food and water. The administration has started rescue missions and is attempting to help the impacted areas. However, the scale of the floods has caused severe harm to both infrastructure and personal property. The authorities are said to have ignored the advice of MA&UD minister KT Rama Rao and avoided widening the Bondhivagu Nala, which may have eased the situation. The Smart City Mission's unfinished smart roadways are also being accused for contributing to the flooding.
According to Santhosh Manduva, the founder and current president of the non-profit organisation Sulakshya Seva Samithi, his home in Bhavani nagar was flooded 23 years ago due to severe rains. He bemoaned the fact that the situation has not altered and emphasised the need for long-term solutions rather than band-aid fixes.
Although climate change is a factor, Dr. suresh Devath, the head of the non-profit Society for Public Welfare and Initiative (SPWI), emphasised that unlawful encroachments are a substantial contributor to the situation's exacerbation. He asked officials to develop long-term plans, including as infrastructure upgrades and policy adjustments, to lessen the strain on the public coffers and prevent people from experiencing recurrent misery during each monsoon season.
