Cashew industry crisis in Andhra..!?
Cashew growers in Palasa in the Uddanam area of srikakulam district are on strike for 25 days since last 5th. Due to the depression in the cashew market, the cost of processing cashews has increased tremendously, and the situation of the producers has worsened. About 350 cashew units had to be closed down. As a result, 20,000 people will lose their jobs. More than 350 cashew units are operating in Palasa Industrial Estate and surrounding villages. 3,000 bags of raw cashews are processed here per day. It is because of these raw cashew units that Palasa town is considered as the financial capital of srikakulam district. From here every day two tons of refined cashews are exported to Gorakhpur, Indore, Kanpur, Jaipur, and many other places. However, the industry has been facing many problems and challenges for the past few months. Especially the reasons like high electricity charges and rising cost of labor for treatment are hurting this industry. Moreover, importing cheap cashews from vietnam is also hurting the industry. Unable to bear the cost of running the units, the cashew producers announced a 25-day strike.
Rameswara Rao suggested to the state government that a cashew board should be set up in andhra pradesh on the same lines as kerala and that this board would resolve issues related to cashew production, marketing, and other matters. He said that they are arranging a meeting with other producers on the 15th of this month to discuss whether to continue the strike till the 30th of July. About 20,000 people protested against the closure of cashew units.
