Will Rishi Sunak take post as British Prime Minister?
The possibility of Indian-origin leader Rishi Sunak taking over the leadership of the Conservative party became stronger on monday after former prime minister Boris Johnson's claim to the post of british prime minister was denied. The former prime minister withdrew from the race for the prime ministership on sunday night, saying "this is not the right time" to make a comeback.
With this, the possibility of victory on diwali for Rishi Sunak cannot be ruled out. The 42-year-old former chancellor declared his candidacy, saying his goals were to "repair the country's economy, unite his party, and work for the country." By easily surpassing the 100-MP threshold, he has significantly edged out the competitors. The house of Commons leader and sole contender for prime minister, Penny Mordaunt, has gotten closer to reaching the required 100 MPs, increasing the likelihood that the former finance minister will be chosen as soon as monday night. There might be a new leader named soon.If both Sunak and Mordaunt are selected for the final list, there will be 170,000 Conservative members who will vote online. Sunak had lost to outgoing prime minister Liz Truss in the party's leadership election held last month. Truss announced his resignation as prime minister on thursday after just 45 days after an open rebellion against her leadership in the Conservative Party.
