There is a rupture in the middle of the dam, and the bed dam has already broken. The public holds the government responsible for the greater risk of the dam failing. During the French reign, a bed dam was built across the Sankarabharani river between pondicherry and Sellippattu-Pillaiyarkuppam in 1906. Heavy rains in 2016 entirely destroyed the middle and lower floors of the bed dam due to a lack of sufficient maintenance. During the rainy season, the Public Works Department will stack sandbags and repair the breakage on occasion.
The public sector will spend tens of thousands of dollars on this. In december of last year, it was transformed into a tourist attraction, complete with a magnificent stream of water in the bed dam. people began to gather in considerable numbers. Flooding and another portion of the bed dam ruptured as a result of the intense rains that followed. Thousands of cubic feet of water were discharged into the sea, making water storage in the bed dam unfeasible. The dam has been visited by the public works agency on a regular basis since then. The water in the Veedur dam has opened in this condition, but the floodwaters have increased due to the entrance of rainwater.
According to the residents, "For many years, the 100-year-old dam has been damaged. Twenty villages, including Pillaiyarkuppam, petitioned the government to restore the dam, but the request was denied. Sandbags are temporarily stacked during the rainy season. The floods have wreaked havoc on agriculture and the demand for drinking water."
