Illegal constructions in Buckingham Canal - Will Govt take steps?
The Buckingham Canal is being built near Thiruvanmiyur Ranganathapuram by the DNDRC without the approval of the Department Of Public works. The citizens of the vicinity argue that this is a violation of the chennai High court judgement. The very worst area in chennai during the 2015 flooding was Thiruvanmiyur Ranganathapuram. The Buckingham Canal flooded, flooding residential neighbourhoods to waist-deep levels. As a result, the people suffered tremendously.
Before the northeast monsoon arrives, work is being done to clean the sky lotuses that have accumulated in the Buckingham Canal. The Buckingham Canal's side walls are being built near the Thiruvanmiyur Flying Station in this example. The side wall that was previously in place has been dismantled. The residents of the region claim that this is in violation of a chennai High court decision prohibiting construction activities on water bodies.
The government should issue an executive order promptly to protect water levels, according to the chennai High court, which has been considering cases connected to encroachments on the Chittagong Lake other water bodies. The tamil Nadu government, which has submitted a response in the lawsuit, has stated that a directive to preserve water levels will be issued soon.
The Public Works Department has also declared that work on rehabilitating the Buckingham Canal will commence later this year at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore. On the one hand, the Buckingham Canal is being restored by the government. Building work on the canal, on the other hand, is being done without the consent of the Public Works Department.
