Chandraayan 2's Vikram Hard Landed within 500 meters due to reduction in Velocity

Chandrayaan-2's vikram lander couldn't make a soft landing on the lunar surdata-face due to the reduction in the velocity and it ended as a hard landing. As the velocity reduced during the descent, vikram lander had a hard landing.

 

 

Mr.Jitendra Singh, the minister of the state if the Prime Minister's office, who takes care of the space department, said the first phase of the descent was performed nominally from an altitude of 30 kms to 7.4 kms above the moon's surdata-face and velocity was reduced from 1,683 meters per second to 146 meters per second.

 

But in the second phase of descent, the velocity was reduced more than the designed value and due to this deviation, the conditions at the start of the braking phase were beyond the parameters and as a result, vikram hard-landed within 500 meters of the designated landing site. He also added that the components of the technology demonstration, including the launch, orbital critical maneuvers, lander separation, de-boost, and rough braking phase were successfully accomplished. Earlier, nasa has lauded India's historic Chandrayaan-2 mission, saying the indian Space Research Organization's attempt to soft-land the vikram module on the lunar south Pole has "inspired" it.
