After two successful 2024 productions, Blue Star and J Baby, he is currently anticipating the release of his masterpiece Thangalaan, starring Vikram.

Pa Ranjith talks candidly about his works, his vision, and his significant bollywood debut in this exclusive interview with HT.

All of the scripts you have supported, from Blue Star to your first production, Pariyerum Perumal, have dealt with caste discrimination and societal reform. Is that your primary goal when it comes to movies?

Yes, without a doubt! Prior to my career in film, I was troubled by a number of social issues. I started watching movies and reading a lot to learn about society and these problems. I'm not a huge moviegoer. As you are aware, the films I saw in college were not at all like the ones you see in theaters. Instead, they were exhibited at film festivals and included German, Russian, and Iranian films.

Their respective areas of attention and concern differed. I was interested in how they interpreted and represented socio-politics. After switching from art to visual media, I made the decision to become a director. My primary motivation for entering the film industry was to concentrate on socio-politics, including identity, origins, and the demands of the populace. It was my intention for my scripts to address this. My films became commercially viable for producers and began to spark conversations and controversies.

How do you make sure you maintain your image as a commercial hero while incorporating your socio-political message when working with major celebrities like vikram or Rajinikanth?

I am quite transparent about my political beliefs and opinions. Those who are interested in working with me are already aware of my values. The first rule of working with me is that you have to be aware of and agree with my politics. There is no hidden purpose, and I am comfortable dealing with anyone. I even tell the stars directly what my script is about. Actors respect my personal space and my ability to tell the story the way I want to, and I respect their standing in the industry and the expectations that their audience have of them. There is total understanding between the parties.
