James Gunn discusses why Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was unaffected by Thor: love and Thunder. At the start of the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War, four years after the events of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Star-Lord and company decoded an Asgardian distress signal and saved the god of Thunder. In the climactic scenes of Endgame, chris Pratt's Peter Quill, chris Hemsworth's Thor, and the "Asgardians of the Galaxy" took a ride on the Benatar after they became the hilarious stars of Infinity War.
Hemsworth returned in his fourth straight solo performance as the title character in Taika Waititi's much awaited love and Thunder, which debuted in theatres earlier this month. love and Thunder picked up with Thor, Star-Lord, Dave Bautista's Drax, Pom Klementieff's Mantis, Bradley Cooper's Rocket, Karen Gillan's Nebula, and Vin Diesel's Groot indefinitely after Endgame. Gunn's eclectic band of misfits, however, only make an appearance in the movie for a brief period of time before Thor learns of a distress call and splits from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Now, Gunn reveals why the Guardians in Vol. 3 won't notice much of a difference from Thor: love and Thunder. During a Comic-Con interview with Screen Rant, Gunn briefly discusses the Guardians' part in love and Thunder. The writer/director responds that he developed the script for Vol. 3 before finding out they would be in love and Thunder when asked if their time working with Thor had altered the crew.
