Following the march 3 high court decision designating amaravati as the sole capital of the state, ysr congress party president and andhra pradesh chief minister Y S jagan Mohan Reddy's ambitious plans to relocate his administrative capital to Visakhapatnam have gone horribly awry. Previously, there were rumours coming from the government, the employees' unions, and the ruling party that the chief minister might move to Visakhapatnam at any time.
Over the course of the last two years, these sources set at least six deadlines for the transfer of capital, but none of them came true. There were rumours at one point that the chief minister alone, if not the entire administration, may run things out of Visakhapatnam. The YSRC believed that by frequently announcing the move of the capital to Visakhapatnam, it would significantly increase its political clout in the northern coastal Andhra districts.
In an effort to benefit from the relocation of the capital, the party leaders purchased vast tracts of land in and around Visakhapatnam. However, as a result of the high court's ruling and the assembly's decision to drop the three capitals bill, the situation in coastal Andhra has fundamentally changed.
