The tamil Nadu government has been ordered to take further legal action against a production studio for depicting cigarette consumption in a movie featuring actor dhanush that was created and premiered in 2014. S M Subramaniam, the statewide coordinator of the tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control, gave the order recently while admitting a writ appeal from S Cyril Alexander, the state coordinator of the tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Products.
The petition requested that the health Authority start prosecuting Wunderbar Films Pvt . ltd. under Section 5 of the cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Federal ban of Commercial and Regulatory requirements of Trade and Commerce, Manufacturing, Transmission and Distribution) Act, 2003 for depicting the main protagonist smoking and drinking without providing any caution or health advice and recommendations.
Dhanush has been shown smoking tobacco in various parts in the tamil feature length film 'Velai Illa Pattadhari' (VIP), which was released in 2014. Because his complaint from 2014 went unanswered, Cyril filed the current writ case for the directive in the same year. When the case came up previously, the judge was told that the people involved had sent Wunderbar a letter in which they recognised their mistake and apologised. They argue, however, that such charges would not fall underneath the Cinematograph Act's terms.
