"I want to be a good husband. I want to be a good father. I want to be a man. I do not want to shed tears when I am in trouble."
November 19 is international Men's Day. It is celebrated in about 60 countries around the world.
Why is it a day for men?
The day is celebrated to promote the cultural, political, social and economic development of men in various fields. The main purpose of the day's management is to achieve men's rights, health, positive views and gender equality.
Each year a different theme is decided for Men's Day. The theme for this year's international Men's Day is "Creating Better Relationships between Men and Women".
"Men's Day is a must"
The theme for this year's international Men's Day is in keeping with the times. It is said that patriarchal values do as much harm to women as they do to men. The issue of equality is not just for women, it is important for men as well.
Boys are also facing various kinds of social changes
"Men find it very difficult to tell their problems to others. For example sexual problems, or other problems they do not like to talk to anyone in a hurry. Men also have stress and mental health problems.
Society has changed, conditions have changed. We too must change. Society is moving towards the centre of the individual. Recalling Ambedkar's argument that rights are important to individuals.
Should men not cry?
"Boys are told not to cry, to be emotionally strong. But, are boys supposed to have emotions too? Emotions have no gender! Emotions are just as emotional as patriarchy puts a lot of pressure on men.
"Society is ridiculed for its stereotyped ideas, but there is no other reason. It's just like the idea that women should cook. Writers like Sripada Subramanya Shastri also wrote about the pressure society put on men in the 1930s.
