In 1956 the Act was approved by the parliament granting AIIMS autonomy, or independence. Ultimately, queen Elizabeth II of england dedicated AIIMS's first building on january 27, 1961. But at the time, AIIMS lacked a hospital of its own. 50 medical students were involved in the founding of the AIIMS education and Research Department. Safdarjung Hospital used to be the location of student practicals. In 1962, AIIMS acquired a second building following this. Subsequently, this is where clinical research and patient therapy began.

At delhi AIIMS, there are now 7 centres and 42 departments. There are 1095 faculty members overall, and there are 12318 non-faculty members. AIIMS treated 44 lakh 14 thousand 490 patients in the OPD in 2019–20. A total of 2,68,144 patients received treatment and admission. Over two lakh people received surgery out of these. The number of beds exceeds three thousand. Every year, more than 600 research publications are released.

Delhi AIIMS tops the NIRF ranking.

The nation's medical colleges are ranked by the NIRF according to criteria including research, education, and other considerations. The NIRF Ranking of Medical Colleges 2023 indicates that AIIMS delhi has maintained its position as India's top medical college for an extended period of time. It continued to hold the top spot in 2023.

AIIMS Jodhpur's ranking has moved up three spots. The rankings of AIIMS bhubaneswar and AIIMS rishikesh have changed from 26th to 17th and 48th to 22nd, respectively. The top AIIMS are located in delhi, Jodhpur, rishikesh, bhopal, patna, Raipur, and Bhubaneswar. For the first time, AIIMS patna and bhopal have made the list, coming in at 27th and 38th, respectively.
