Why AC coaches are in the middle of the train?

While traveling on the train, you must have noticed that usually, the AC coaches are in the middle of the train. Most of the trains have the first compartment as engine, then the general coach, then some sleepers, the AC compartment in the middle, then again the sleeper, the general compartment, and the guard room at the last. If a train has all AC coaches, then the matter is different. Otherwise, it usually happens like this. Do you know the reason for this?

You must have noticed that the exit gates of train stations are located exactly in the middle of the station. In such a situation, when the train stops at the platform, the AC coaches are very close to this exit gate. So, the passengers who travel in AC coach can exit in a short duration. Whereas the crowd of general coaches gets divided at both ends on the platform.

The general coach and sleeper coach usually have more passengers in trains, the official said. There are fewer passengers in AC coaches as compared to them. This helps the railway administration in managing the crowd.

When did the practice of putting upper-class coaches in the middle of railways start when steam engines were dominant in India, diesel engines came later and there was a lot of noise in both these engines. When the train is running, the noise will be a bit high. The upper-class passenger had to hear less noise so that their coach was placed slightly away from the engine. However, most of the electric engines are currently running, whose noise when running is minimal.
