As a result of the coal scarcity in our country's thermal plants, an energy crisis is approaching in several states. Coal accounts for around 70% of the country's power generation. Currently, 135 power plants have just four days' worth of coal supplies. After the lockdown, electricity demand skyrocketed. According to experts, the current situation is unavoidable since there is insufficient coal supply to satisfy demand.

They were causing unneeded alarm, according to Union Power minister RK Singh. The Center further emphasised that over the following three days, it has pledged to deliver 1.6 million tonnes each day.

Due to a coal shortage, thirteen thermal power facilities in Maharashtra have been temporarily shut down.

Punjab will continue to experience up to three-hour daily power outages until october 13, according to state-owned utility PSPCL. The punjab State electricity Corporation Limited has had to reduce its power output due to a severe coal scarcity.

Tata Power has halted energy output at its imported coal-fired power facility in Mundra, Gujarat. Rajasthan is experiencing daily one-hour power outages due to a shortage of producing capacity, according to a petition to the supreme court by Tata Power.

If the lack of coal persists, load-shedding may be necessary, according to Kerala Electricity minister K Krishnankutty. Owing to the shutdown of four thermal plants due to a coal shortfall, the State has been facing a 15% power shortage from the Central Pool.

Tangedco, the Tamil Nadu   Generation and Distribution Corporation have announced that power will be turned off in parts of chennai to allow for maintenance work.
Andhra Pradesh has been able to satisfy the daily grid demand of 185-190 mega units (MU). APGENCO's power plants, which provide roughly 45 per cent of the state's energy, have only enough coal to last one or two days and might be further damaged.

TPDDL, which distributes energy to portions of delhi, has issued a warning of occasional rotating power outages. According to the firm, its plants that sell power to Delhi discoms have enough coal on hand to satisfy generation needs for 1-2 days.

The coal scarcity is also wreaking havoc in Jharkhand and Bihar.
