Tesla's petition for a reduction in import tariff to enter india may be finalised soon by the Finance Ministry. The heavy industries ministry, which is the lone dissenter despite fierce resistance from some of the main car industry participants, claims that the concessions will benefit in the medium run. Several government departments have backed the US electric car producer, including the road transport ministry, the department for the development of industry and internal commerce, and NITI Aayog.

Tariff reductions are being discussed in conjunction with specific criteria, such as a mandatory amount of infrastructure building in the form of charging stations or other comparable obligations. A local sourcing provision, on the other hand, might be included, requiring the Elon Musk-founded business to purchase some components from India. Some government officials support forcing the corporation to invest in charging infrastructure, which would benefit other electric vehicle owners.

Elon Musk has been talking about entering india for a few years, but it is conditional on concessions. According to the journal, tesla has requested a 40 per cent reduction in import duties on fully completed electric cars priced below $40,000, down from the current 60 per cent, and a 60 per cent reduction in import duties on vehicles priced above $40,000, down from the current 100 per cent.

Tesla has established a business entity in india as part of its expansion aspirations. Over the next few years, the Palo Alto-based startup plans to join the indian market. local sourcing proponents claim that it will aid in the development of a vendor base in the country, which will be useful to the electric vehicle industry in the long term.
