Don't respond to the text that EB bill will be disconnected..!?
Tamil Nadu police DGP Sylendra Babu has warned that if you receive an SMS saying that your electricity connection will be disconnected, do not respond to it. He also said that this is a fraudulent strategy of extortion gangs. As technology grows, so do scams. In this line, people living in chennai have been receiving fake SMS from some unknown numbers for the last week saying that electricity will be cut at 10:30 pm due to non-payment of electricity bill. All incoming text messages are identical. It is mentioned in the message that it is being sent from the EB office and can be contacted on the given phone number if needed.
Some people who see this are calling it and getting disappointed. Many are shocked to receive such messages even after paying their electricity bill. They are trying to call the phone number in the message. But the DGP of tamil Nadu police has warned that such text messages should be ignored as it is an attempt to extort money. In the video released by him in this regard, he said that they have been alerting the public on behalf of the police about various scams, and one such scam has recently come up. This is electricity bill fraud you will get a message that customer it is from the electricity board that your electricity connection will be cut off today at 10:30 pm as you have not paid the first electricity bill and you will get a message that the authorities should also send the electricity board to avoid disconnection. There will also be a phone number. If you call that number and tell the person on the other end that you have paid your electricity bill, the person will tell you to send your screenshot.
A few minutes after you send the screenshot they will call you from the electricity board, your electricity bill is not updated on our computer, so download an app we say, just pay 10 rupees and your electricity connection will not be disconnected. You shouldn't download the app even if you can't escape, because if you do, your bank account will keep draining little by little. They can see the one-time OTP on your phone. So avoid such messages. If someone sends a message like this, report it to the police. Give us information including 100, and 112, otherwise, just give information to police Helpline. They have formed a special team to catch them and they will catch them soon.
