Veppam Poo Rasam Recipe (Neem Flower Rasam)
- 1 cup fresh neem flowers (veppam poo), cleaned and washed
- 1 tbsp toor dal (pigeon peas)
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 dried red chilies
- 1 tsp black peppercorns
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp tamarind paste or lemon-data-sized tamarind soaked in water
- 2 garlic cloves (optional)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- A few curry leaves
- 2 tbsp oil or ghee
- Salt to taste
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Rinse and cook toor dal in a pressure cooker with 2 cups water until soft and mushy. Mash it well and keep aside.2. Prepare tamarind Water:
Soak tamarind in warm water and extract the juice. If using tamarind paste, dissolve in water.3. Roast Spices:
Dry roast black peppercorns, cumin seeds, and dried red chilies until aromatic. Let cool and grind into a coarse powder.4. Prepare neem Flowers:
Pluck fresh neem flowers and rinse well to remove any bitterness.5. Cook rasam Base:
Heat oil or ghee in a pot. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add asafoetida and curry leaves.6. Add Tomatoes & Spices:
Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and the ground spice powder. Sauté for a few minutes until tomatoes soften.7. Add neem Flowers:
Add neem flowers and sauté briefly (2-3 minutes).8. Add Dal & tamarind Water:
Pour mashed dal and tamarind water into the pot. Add salt and mix well. Add about 2 cups of water and bring to a boil.9. Simmer:
Let it simmer gently for 10-15 minutes to allow flavors to blend.10. Garnish & Serve:
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed rice or enjoy as a soup.Tips:
