Tragic Jallikattu - 7 Including Spectators Dead and More Than 400 Injured Severely
During jallikattu and other bull-taming activities that took place around tamil Nadu on thursday (Jan 16), seven people—six of them were spectators—were killed and over 400 others were wounded. During the Siravayal manjuvirattu in sivaganga district, a bull gored one of the victims, who passed away in a hospital. Two other deaths happened during different incidents in the central areas, while another death was recorded in the Alanganallur jallikattu in Madurai.
In Basthalapalli, krishnagiri district, a 30-year-old man died during an eruthu vidum vizha, a kind of bull racing. At the jallikattu festival at Sentharapatti, salem district, a 45-year-old man was assaulted by a bull and later died from his wounds. Furthermore, a bull owner lost both his bull and himself to drowning while trying to recover the runaway animal from the Siravayal arena.
During jallikattu activities that took place in the districts of Pudukottai, Karur, and Trichy, 156 people were injured. At the Siravayal tournament, 42-year-old S. Subbaiah of Devakottai was tragically gored. Thirty-three spectators and seventeen bull owners were among the 76 injured at the famous Alanganallur jallikattu. One of the injured, P. Periasamy, 56, of Mettupatti, who had been a spectator at the incident, passed away from his wounds despite medical attention.
While waiting at a bus stop during the jallikattu event in Mangadevanpatti, S. Perumal, 70, of Odugampatti village near Keeranur in Pudukottai, was hit by a bull that fled from the arena. The Karur district's Ratchandar Thirumalai (RT Malai) hosted a jallikattu where another casualty was recorded. A bull assault seriously injured Kuzhandhaivel, a 65-year-old resident of Samuthiram, which is close to Kulumani in Trichy. After being sent to Trichy's mahatma gandhi Memorial government Hospital (MGMGH), he passed away from his wounds.
52 people were hurt at the RT Malai jallikattu, which was officially opened by minister V. Senthilbalaji. On behalf of chief minister M.K. stalin and deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi stalin, the event awarded a vehicle to the owner of the best-performing bull and a motorbike to the top tamer.
