On december 9, 2020, she suddenly committed suicide by hanging herself while staying with her beloved husband Hemnath at a star hotel in Nasarathpet, Chennai. While a case was registered against about 7 people in connection with Chitra's death and they were imprisoned, the police were also investigating whether it was suicide or murder.While the Chitra-Hemnath case had been going on in the Women's Mahila court for the past three years, Judge Revathi, who heard the case, pointed out that there was no evidence, witness, or proxy for Chitra's murder and announced the release of seven people including Hemnath who were arrested in her case. It is said that the sudden release of seven people including Hemnath in august caused great mental distress to Chitra's father. Chitra's father Kamaraj, who was a retired police officer and was saddened every day that the person responsible for his daughter's suicide could not be punished, committed suicide by hanging himself this morning.
