Recall of popular eye drops due to fungus
A Systane eye drop product was identified as having contamination.
A well-known brand of eye drops has been recalled in the united states after a vial was discovered to be contaminated with a fungus.
The Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF, which means preservative-free, have been promoted as providing 'fast-acting hydration and enduring relief.'
Major media outlets in the US covered the recall announcement on Wednesday, despite Alcon Laboratories based in texas notifying the federal authorities about the voluntary recall on Saturday, with the Food and Drug Administration posting the recall details on Monday.
According to Alcon, the recall was initiated after 'a consumer complaint regarding foreign material found inside a sealed single-use vial,' which was later identified as 'fungal.'
Fungal eye infections can lead to vision loss and may be life-threatening for individuals with weakened immune systems.
Alcon mentioned that it has not yet received any reports of negative effects from the affected eye drops.
The recall impacts Lot 10101, which has an expiration date of september 2025.
These were marketed in packs of 25 single-use vials to major retailers including Target, Kroger, Walmart, and Walgreens, along with online sales.
The FDA has advised anyone who may have bought a recalled package to stop using it immediately and return it to the retailer for a replacement or refund.
Those who have experienced adverse effects from the drops should report the issue to the MedWatch Adverse event Reporting program, which can be done online, by mail, or by fax, according to the agency.
