PTI is accused by Pakistani Minister Attaullah Tarar of politicising the matter of the military court
Islamabad [Pakistan], december 26: Attaullah Tarar, the Federal minister for Information and Broadcasting of pakistan, claimed on wednesday that the pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party is exploiting the matter of military courts for political advantage and making unfounded assertions to secure concessions, as mentioned by ARY News.
Tarar stated that the sentences handed down by military courts do not infringe upon the right to a fair trial, as individuals have the right to legal representation, access to family, and the chance to appeal twice—first within the military judicial process and then in the appropriate high court, according to ARY News.
He asserted that international laws were adhered to during the trials of those involved in the events of May 9, with no breaches of human rights. He further noted that all those accused will data-face penalties in line with legal standards.
Tarar condemned PTI for misleadingly fostering an "anti-country narrative" regarding military courts, which operate within the law and follow the directives of the supreme court of pakistan, as reported by ARY News.
He clarified that military court proceedings take place when there is an assault on defense installations, such as the incidents at Corps commander House in Mardan and bala Hisar Fort, according to ARY News.
Tarar pointed out that when such incidents happen, it is the duty of the defense establishment to apprehend the suspects, analogous to how railway police would file a report for offenses committed on railways.
These cases are prosecuted under the military Act, which guarantees a fair trial based on undeniable evidence against the perpetrators. He also mentioned that the right to contest military court rulings is maintained and suggested that PTI should pursue the legal options available to them, as noted by ARY News.
He reminded that PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, had previously commended the advantages of military courts, highlighting the substantial evidence against those who were tried and the crucial nature of upholding the rule of law. He emphadata-sized that video clips of these remarks are still being shared online.
The united states (US) had previously expressed apprehension regarding the sentencing of 25 individuals by a military court in Islamabad, after they were convicted of assaulting army facilities.
"The united states is troubled by the sentencing of Pakistani civilians in a military tribunal and urges Pakistani authorities to honor the rights to a fair trial and appropriate legal process," stated Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, in a message on X on Monday.
The military tribunal handed down prison sentences to 25 individuals ranging from two to ten years for their involvement in targeting military installations during protests that erupted following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in May of last year.
In a statement, the pakistan military described the events of May 9 as unfortunate episodes of "politically instigated violence and arson in various locations, representing a dark moment in Pakistan's history," asserting that such orchestrated attacks were conducted on army installations based on a sustained narrative filled with hatred and deceit, according to The Express Tribune.
