150 crocodiles escape in Sathanur dam..!?
Shocking news has been reported that more than 150 crocodiles have escaped from the Sathanur dam and crocodile farm into the Pennayar River. Near Sathanur dam in the Thiruvannamalai district, there is the second-largest crocodile farm in Asia. The dam is also home to a large number of crocodiles. Crocodiles usually come out of the dam and search for prey on the banks during the summer. local fishermen are affected at such times. On the 2nd, heavy rains caused an increase in the water level in the Thenpennai River. More than 54,000 cubic feet of flood water was released from the dam per second. As a result, more than 2 lakh cubic feet of water was released into the Thenpennai River and went to the sea. At that time, more than 150 crocodiles escaped from the Sathanur dam and a nearby farm in the flood.
These have taken refuge in water bodies including lakes and ponds. Many crocodiles have also gone to the sea through the estuary. As the flood waters recede, crocodiles that had taken refuge in water bodies have started to emerge. Two crocodiles have been caught in Cuddalore alone. Due to the crocodiles escaping, there is a risk of harming livestock including goats and cows, children, and those using water bodies. A complaint has been raised that the Water Resources Department and the Forest Department have covered up the information while crocodiles have escaped in large numbers from Sathanur. Regarding this, the Water Resources Department and the Forest Department should create appropriate awareness among the residents living near the water bodies along the penna river in Villupuram, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore districts.
