What to Do with Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, and Passport After a Family Member's Death?

SIBY JEYYA
Nowadays, practically all government or other official tasks, including opening bank accounts, demand the use of vital papers like Aadhaar, voter ID, and PAN cards. These records are verification of address as well. But many people don't know what to do with their paperwork if a family member dies. Here are some things you should know to avoid misusing their paperwork after they pass away.

Voter ID

Voting is done with a voter ID. On the other hand, you may cancel someone's voter ID after they pass away. Fill out Form 7 in person at the election office to do this. After that, the card will be canceled. To revoke the voter ID, a death certificate could be needed.

Aadhaar Card

There is no provision to cancel or return an Aadhaar card. However, you can lock it.

To lock an Aadhaar card, visit the official website www.uidai.gov.in, select 'My Aadhaar,' then click on 'Aadhaar Services' and choose 'Lock/Unlock Biometrics.'

Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and the provided captcha code.

Select the 'Send OTP' option, enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number, and proceed.

You will get the option to lock or unlock the biometric data. Click the 'Lock' button to lock the biometric data.
Additionally, if the deceased was availing of any schemes or subsidies via Aadhaar, the concerned department must be informed of their death to remove their name from the scheme.

PAN Card

Filing income taxes and creating bank or demat accounts require a PAN card. A PAN cardholder's relatives should return the card after their death. Get in touch with the Income Tax Department about this. To prevent future issues, make sure all of the deceased's accounts have been canceled or moved to another person's name before returning the PAN card.

Passport

Similar to the Aadhaar card, a passport cannot be canceled. When a passport's validity expires, it loses its validity. Keep it secure until then to prevent it from ending up in the wrong hands.
