Indian Cinema's Longest Kissing Scene - Do you Know?
Today's topic of discussion is none other than Devika Rani, the actress. Devika Rani, who was born in 1908, came from a wealthy and intelligent family. The Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's sister was sukumari Devi, her paternal grandmother. Rabindranath Tagore's niece Leela Devi Choudhury was also the mother of Devika.
Devika rani grew up in an affluent family with a rich legacy of accomplished people. She was sent to an english boarding school at the age of nine to finish her education during a period when women were not permitted to leave their homes. Devika rani began working in textile design after completing her education and pursuing additional courses in acting, music, architecture, textiles, and interior design.
It has long been known that the kiss from the 1933 movie Karma, which starred real-life couple Devika rani and Himanshu Rai, is "Bollywood's longest kiss ever" and the first-ever bollywood film to have a lip lock. It seems that neither is accurate. The pair kissing on film has been the subject of several myths in india ever since the press at the time claimed that the kiss lasted more than four minutes.
"The Longest Kiss: The Life and Times of Devika rani author Kishwar Desai says, 'The film was made at a time when Rai and rani had just married, they were still very much in love, so if passionate kisses were exchanged on screen, it was not a surprise."
