14-year-old in kerala tested positive for Nipah virus....

The kerala government confirmed on saturday that a 14-year-old Malappuram district kid had contracted Nipah. Pigs and fruit bats are two examples of the animals that can transmit the Nipah virus infection, a zoonotic illness, to humans. Nipah can transfer directly from person to person, though it usually does so through contaminated food or animals. In extreme circumstances, vomiting, a high fever, and a respiratory ailment are possible symptoms in addition to seizures and brain inflammation that results in a coma. There is no immunization for Nipah.

Kerala health Minister Veena George said the child is on a ventilator at a private hospital, and the National Institute of Virology in pune has confirmed the infection. "He will be transferred to the government medical institution in Kozhikode. We've commenced tracking down the contacts. PTI quoted George as saying, "High-risk contacts have already been isolated, and their samples have been sent for testing." George stated that the area's Pandikkad was the epicentre and that safety measures had already been implemented. She requested that those who live in the Pandikkad neighborhood and the hospitals in the area refrain from visiting hospital patients and cover their data-faces while they are out in public. "A three-km radius from the epicentre at Pandikkad will be strictly observed and restrictions will be imposed," George said.

The state health authorities were informed about the potential Nipah infection on friday by the private hospital located in Kozhikode.

The department proceeded swiftly, examining the samples in laboratories in kerala and forwarding them to the virology institute in Pune.

Additionally, it recommended avoiding consuming fruits that had been half eaten or bitten by birds or animals. "Just eat fruits that have been thoroughly cleansed. It said that drinks like toddy stored in open containers shouldn't be ingested. There have been reports of nipah outbreaks in the districts of ernakulam in 2019 and kozhikode in 2018, 2021, and 2023. Additionally, bats in the districts of Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram, and ernakulam have been reported to harbor antibodies against the Nipah virus. In 2018, at least 17 people in kerala died as a result of getting the Nipah virus.
