Lok Sabha Speaker post - NDA and Opposition reach Consensus

After reaching an understanding with the ruling BJP-led nda, the opposition has decided not to run a candidate for the office of Speaker of the house of Commons, according to sources. Following the opposition india bloc's announcement that it was weighing its options, the government sent out Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju to foster agreement on the lok sabha Speaker nominee.
 
Om Birla, the former Speaker of the lok sabha, spoke with prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, suggesting that the nda could decide to stay in power. According to earlier reports, if the NDA's choice for lok sabha Speaker could be agreed upon, the opposition may take over as the next leader of the house.
 
June 25 is the cutoff date for nominations to the lok sabha Speaker position. wednesday would have been election day if the opposition had put forward a candidate. Every Speaker in the history of indian parliaments has been chosen by a unanimous vote. Following a savage impasse between the government and the opposition on the nomination of pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, an agreement has been reached about the Speaker's position.
