Leaders of neighbouring countries expected to attend Modi’s swearing-in

On june 8, prime minister Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in by the leaders of at least four neighbouring countries—Bangladesh, sri lanka, bhutan, Nepal, and Mauritius—according to persons familiar with the situation. Official statements from bangladesh and sri lanka verified that during phone calls on Wednesday, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and President Ranil Wickremesinghe received invitations from Modi to the inauguration.
 

The heads of Nepal, Mauritius, and bhutan are also anticipated to attend the inauguration, according to the sources mentioned above, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. On Wednesday, Modi spoke over the phone with the heads of these nations.
 
During these phone calls, the invitation to the inauguration was communicated, and official letters are anticipated to be sent on Thursday, according to sources in New delhi and the capital cities of several of the participating nations.
 
Noorelahi Mina, Hasina's deputy press secretary, informed reporters in Dhaka that the Bangladeshi premier has accepted Modi's invitation to attend the swearing-in event.
 

In a post on X, the Sri Lankan president's media department stated that Wickremesinghe has accepted Modi's phone invitation to attend his swearing-in ceremony.
 
The presidents of neighbouring nations were invited to the inauguration for a number of reasons, including logistical ones and the Modi government's emphasis on its "Neighbourhood First" policy, the sources said.
 

"These kinds of invites will be accepted by the leaders of the surrounding nations with which india has extremely deep ties. Additionally, it conveys the message that New delhi intends to maintain the neighbourhood as the main emphasis," one of the previously mentioned individuals stated.
 
Hasina mentioned the "very cordial and friendly relations between bangladesh and India" during her conversation with Modi over the phone. Right now, bangladesh is India's closest neighbouring partner, and the two countries have advanced a number of projects for energy, rail, and road connection.
 

In his phone chat with Wickremesinghe, Modi stated that india is “proud to be a dependable partner” for the island nation and highlighted sri lanka as a key partner in the Neighbourhood First Policy.
 
During his phone conversation with prime minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth of Mauritius, Modi expressed his eagerness for further cooperation aimed at fortifying their unique bilateral bond.
 
During their phone call, Prime Ministers of Nepal, pushpa Kamal Dahal and Modi underlined their shared commitment to strengthening the extensive and multifarious collaboration between india and Nepal.
