At 11 a.m. on june 4, the election commission of india reported that bollywood actor and trinamool congress mp shatrughan sinha was leading the lok sabha election from West Bengal's asansol constituency by 4302 votes. As the votes were tallied, preliminary results showed that Sinha's closest rival for the seat was former Union minister and bjp candidate Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia.

At first, Bhojpuri singer-actor Pawan Singh was named as the BJP's candidate from Asansol. Still, he said he couldn't argue with the polls. The bjp fielded singer-turned-politician babul supriyo from asansol in 2019, and he beat TMC politician and actress moon moon Sen. With a massive vote percentage of 51.16%, Supriyo had effectively won the seat, whereas Sen could only muster 35.19%.

Following the resignation of babul supriyo, a two-term mp before joining the TMC, Sinha won the 2022 asansol by-election. With a margin of more than 3 lakh votes, he defeated Agnimitra Paul of the bjp to win the seat. The 77-year-old Sinha, sometimes referred to as "Bihari Babu," joined the bjp in 1980 to begin his political career. In the 1992 by-election for the New delhi seat, he ran against actor rajesh khanna in his first political battle. Khanna, the congress candidate, defeated Sinha by a margin of 2,500 votes.
