AP Loses Hyderabad to Telangana, But...

SIBY JEYYA
Starting Sunday, the final formal connection between andhra pradesh and telangana will be broken, with hyderabad no longer serving as the joint capital of the telugu states and becoming simply the capital of Telangana.

This may create some grief for the people of andhra pradesh, who still lack a true capital city ten years after split, but their telangana counterparts would be the only proprietors of a worldwide city such as Hyderabad.

In truth, the people of andhra pradesh lost their capital, hyderabad, about nine years ago, when then-chief minister and telugu desam party president N chandrababu naidu relocated to vijayawada following the infamous cash-for-vote scandal.

However, Naidu conveyed the idea that he was creating a world-class capital in Amaravati. He might have functioned from hyderabad until the new capital was built, as the Andhra secretariat and state assembly were still based in the joint capital.

However, Naidu preferred to function from vijayawada, and within months, the whole secretariat personnel relocated to Amaravati. The state legislature was relocated shortly thereafter, and the HC followed suit a few years later.

For all practical purposes, hyderabad has not been Andhra Pradesh's capital since 2015. Nonetheless, the inhabitants of andhra pradesh felt an emotional tie to the city, which remained the joint capital, at least on paper. Furthermore, the andhra pradesh government maintained authority over a few structures in Hyderabad.

However, as of Sunday, even this final link will be severed, since hyderabad will now be entirely controlled by Telangana. This does not, however, imply that the people of Andhra have lost everything related to Hyderabad. The emotional link between the citizens of both states will continue.

Andhra people have a strong interest in hyderabad, including connections, real estate and corporate ventures, education, and even medical care. They still have a strong sense of ownership in telangana, particularly in hyderabad, and nothing hinders them from visiting.

Despite linguistic variances, the people of the telugu states share a deep cultural link and speak the same language. Andhra food is popular in telangana, and vice versa. Andhra films have a large market in hyderabad, as do telangana films in Andhra.

So, physically, hyderabad may have become part of telangana, but it remains a home for the people of Andhra Pradesh!
