The election commission (EC) has expressed concerns to the supreme court in 2019 over the modifications made to a number of laws pertaining to political fundraising in order to support the electoral bonds scheme, claiming that these changes would have "serious repercussions" on transparency. In a historic decision rendered just days before the lok sabha elections, the supreme court on thursday struck down the electoral bonds programme. The arrangement was declared "unconstitutional" by the court, which also mandated that the identities of the purchasers, the bond's value, and the beneficiaries' data be made public.
