Maldives Requests Indian Troop Withdrawal Amidst 'Boycott' Backlash.!

The "Boycott Maldives" issue has sparked a viral trend due to inappropriate comments made by Maldivian ministers about indian Prime minister Modi. In response, indians have halted travel to the maldives, with travel platforms like MakeMyTrip boycotting the destination. This diplomatic rift is reminiscent of India's historical intervention in the maldives during a rebellion.

In 1988, businessman Abdulla Lutufi revolted against Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, seeking assistance from the Sri Lankan People's Liberation of Organization of tamil Eelam group. The rebel group, comprising 80 mercenaries, seized control of ports, radio stations, and Male's streets, taking hostages. President Gayoom sought help from neighboring countries, but only india responded promptly.


Then-Prime minister Rajiv gandhi initiated "Operation Cactus," dispatching three para commando teams to Male. Landing at Male international airport, they secured the airport and reached the city via boats. The indian army engaged in a fierce battle with the Sri Lankan mercenaries, successfully thwarting the rebellion and saving President Gayoom's government.


"Operation Cactus" garnered international praise, solidifying the bond between india and the Maldives. india maintained a military presence, contributing to radar stations and surveillance planes. However, amidst current diplomatic tensions, the maldives government has requested the withdrawal of indian troops by march 15, raising concerns and highlighting the complex history between the two nations.
