The Israeli Defence Forces have begun their second phase of combat with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, according to Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement on Saturday. He pledged to "destroy the enemy above ground and below ground." Netanyahu told reporters that the conflict would be "long and hard" and that Palestinians should once again leave the northern Gaza Strip, which was the target of Israel's attacks.
