Will Mamata’s leg injury be a motif in Bengal panchayat polls?

S Venkateshwari
Mamata Banerjee has once again hurt her left leg; specifically, her left hip and knee ligaments. The accident happened on june 27 when her helicopter made an emergency landing at Sevoke airport in siliguri due to bad weather.
According to a state government bulletin, the West bengal chief minister has been receiving daily two-hour physiotherapy sessions since that time. It's unclear when mamata would be able to start her campaigning for the panchayat elections on July 8. But if she does, she could need a wheelchair if doctors advise against the movement, much as she did after injured her left foot when running for office in Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections.

The Opposition treated the Nandigram event with caution, and this time is no different. Sukanta Majumdar, the state president of the BJP, has questioned Mamata's injury's timing and even why it usually involves the left leg. It is clear that mamata is being mocked by suggesting that she use a wheelchair to campaign and appeal to people in rural areas. Similar concerns were voiced by Mohammad Salim, state general secretary of the CPI(M), who also suggested that mamata go by road rather than helicopter.
Even if it is purely speculative, the trinamool congress (TMC), which is in power, would not be opposed to the idea of mamata being carried in a wheelchair and winning over the public's compassion. The TMC hasn't had the best of times during the current election season due to charges of corruption and inquiries by national investigative agencies against its leaders. The implementation of welfare programmes in bengal, such as the issuance of work cards and the distribution of houses under the PM Awas Yojana, are still allegedly plagued by allegations of nepotism and corruption, according to the opposition. Additionally, there are claims of MGNREGA funding being stolen.
TMC opponents observed that there was a significant undercurrent of popular resentment when residents of Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district braved explosives being thrown while submitting their nominations for the panchayat elections earlier in June. mamata has already urged people to vote in her name in the panchayat elections in order to reinforce her position and guarantee the continuation of her welfare programmes in an effort to increase the chances of her party winning. She has asked people in north bengal who were being extorted to phone her directly or the chief minister's office via the Shorashori Mukhyomontri (Directly to the CM) scheme.
