South West Monsoon - Chief Secretary Instructs Officers

The Chief Secretary has directed the South West Monsoon Preparedness Meeting to identify the weak banners and remove them in all the districts, including the storm-affected districts like chennai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore. A press release issued by the tamil Nadu government in this regard: A review meeting was held with senior officers of the relevant departments at the Chief secretariat on friday under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Thaoyanbu regarding the preparations for the South West Monsoon.
The head of chennai Regional Meteorological Research Center, who participated in the meeting, said that the rainfall during this year's southwest monsoon season will be normal. Also, the Additional Chief Secretary/Revenue Commissioner elaborated on the preparedness measures taken by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department regarding the South West Monsoon.

Later, the secretaries of various departments, heads of departments, and officers of the Union government Departments highlighted the early warning measures that have been taken to deal effectively with the South West Monsoon. In this meeting, the Chief Secretary gave the following instructions:
•  In the chennai Municipal Corporation areas, all rainwater drains should be cleaned regularly so that rainwater does not stagnate.

• All tunnels should be inspected and drains cleared. Also, it should be ensured that the sensors installed in the tunnels are functioning properly. Automatic motor pumps should be kept ready for immediate discharge of stagnant rainwater. In case of water logging in the tunnels, the traffic police department should immediately make arrangements to take alternate routes so that the public does not data-face any inconvenience.


• This year too, like previous warning messages were given to the public by the traffic police department last year.


• In case of flooding on footbridges, the police department should make arrangements for alternative routes and monitor public to avoid taking selfies on footbridges and dangerous water bodies.


• All rain water drainage works being carried out by chennai Corporation and other parts of tamil Nadu should be completed as soon as possible.


• As there is a high chance of rainwater stagnation on narrow railway bridges, during rainy season these bridges should be covered with rainwater ponding, dredging work and automatic motor pumps should be installed to remove stagnant rainwater immediately.


• Along with ensuring regular dredging of water bodies, aerial lotus removal should be done regularly.


• Municipal Corporations, Municipalities and Rural Development Department Officers should identify the weak flags in all districts including storm-affected districts like chennai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and take immediate steps to remove them.


• Weak buildings should be identified, public use should be avoided, and steps should be taken to demolish and dispose of them safely.


• The Western Ghats districts, which are likely to receive heavy rainfall due to the Southwest Monsoon, and the water flow of the dams there should be monitored regularly.


• He advised that the relevant departments should prepare a disaster management plan during the South West Monsoon season, and based on that, appoint appropriate officers to deal with disasters effectively, keep all necessary equipment ready and coordinate all departments.


• The study meeting was attended by Secretaries of various Departments, Heads of concerned Departments, Army, air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, india Meteorological Department, Union Water Resources Commission, National Disaster Response Force, Union government Department Officers and chennai Corporation Commissioner.
