According to railway officials, the accident took place at 3.27 pm when the train was running between Valapattanam and Kannur Chirakkal. The train is going from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram. police said the incident came to light when railway officials noticed scratches on the window panes of the train while it was passing through the Valapatnam area of the district in north Kerala. Suspecting that the train passing through Valapattanam was pelted with stones, the railway officials immediately informed the police. Although it has not been confirmed that the incident actually took place in its Valapattana area, the police said that they have started an investigation and have taken all measures to prevent such incidents from happening.

Several Vande Bharat Express trains have already been pelted with stones in various parts of the country. In this sequence, another Vande Bharat train was pelted with stones. Tirur was also on the list of stops in the first reports soon after the Vande Bharat train was announced. However, later, it was removed when Shornur was added.
